ASÍ DESAPARECEMOS [Thus we Disappear] develops out of two critical moments in the history of Brazil: the official order, in 1890, to burn all of the country’s documents and papers related to slavery, two years after its formal abolition; and the 2018 destruction of the National Museum of Brazil and its collection in Rio de Janeiro in a fire caused by negligent government cuts to the budget for protecting historical memory. From those situated historical events, the project proceeds with a cross-national connection between Brazilian and Colombian memories of obliteration. The work was presented in the Centro de Memória, Paz y Reconciliación de Bogotá in front of the iconic intervention by artist Beatriz Gonzáles in the Columbarios of the Santa Fé cemetery.
